Buddha left no writings. After his death there was a schism between Mahayana ("Greater Vehicle") and Theraveda ("Lesser Vehicle). Theraveda is the Buddhism of Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Sri Lanka. It believes that enlightenment is an individual pursuit. Mahayana believes tha the goal is to achieve personal enlightenment to help others to achieve enlightenment. Mahayana Buddhism is further evolved into East Asian (Vietnam and China) and Tibetan schools. Bhutanese Buddhism is Drukpa Kagyupa or Black Hat Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism in its Tantric form. Like Sikkim's Buddhism, it was influenced by Bon, pre-Buddhist animism and Guru Rimpoche.
