More history

Under the Mughal Empire, Bengal flourished. East Bengal is very fertile, because of the regular flooding of the Ganges River. It became wealthy through cotton and its fine muslin products.
The British arrived in the 18th century through the East India company. The cotton industry declined under the British.
At the Partition, India was split on religious basis, between Hindu and Muslim. East Bengal became East Pakistan.
Pakistan was ruled from West Pakistan and the East Pakistanis felt they were treated as a colony by West Pakistan. In 1959, the Pakistan government declared that Urdu would be the official language of Pakistan. East Pakistanis spoke many languages, but not Urdu. Ultimately this led to a bloody civil war. In 1971. East Pakistan became an independent country, Bangladesh.
