Darjeeling was used by the British as a retreat from the summer heat in Calcutta. Originally the journey from Calcutta took 5-6 days by train, steamboat and ox cart. The toy train opened in 1881 and cut the journey significantly. The original coal fueled steam engines are still in use. We took the train to Ghoom and then walked 7 km back to Darjeeling. We then had a butter masala dosa, a potato stuffed pancake for lunch.
